Removing McAfee from Windows 7 and Windows Vista

The contract between UNH IT and McAfee will expire in June 2012. Faculty, staff, and students should replace McAfee prior to the end of June.
Forefront will automatically remove McAfee on its own. Students should use the instructions below to manually remove McAfee before installing Microsoft Security Essentials or other antivirus products.
Below are the instructions to remove McAfee from Windows 7 and Windows Vista. For instructions on how to remove McAfee from Windows XP, click here.
Instructions to remove McAfee:

  1. Click the Start Button The Windows 7 Start Button logo
  2. Click Control Panel The Windows 7 Control Panel logo
  3. View by Icons (Large or Small) The view control drop down menu for the Windows 7 control panel.
  4. Click Programs and Features

  5. Locate McAfee VirusScan Enterprise and click Uninstall.

  6. Locate McAfee AntiSpyware Enterprise Module and click Uninstall. An error may occur. If so, select Yes.

  7. Locate McAfee Agent and click Uninstall.
  8. If you receive an error or series of errors trying to remove McAfee Agent, follow the instructions below.

To remove the McAfee Agent, follow this procedure:

  1. Click the Start Button The Windows 7 Start Button logo
  2. Type "cmd" in the search area, by do not press enter.
  3. Right click on the cmd.exe icon The Windows 7 cmd.ede icon and choose "run as administrator."
  4. Highlight and comp the following command (including the quotation marks):
    "c:\program files\mcafee\common framework\frminst" /remove=agent

    64-bit Windows 7 and Vista users, highlight and copy the following command (including the quotation marks):
    "c:\program files (x86)\mcafee\common framework\frminst" /remove=agent

  5. Right click the command prompt and select Paste.
  6. Press Enter and the uninstallation will start.

  7. A prompt will inform you that “McAfee Agent Setup completed Successfully.”  Click OK. McAfee is now fully uninstalled from your PC.
